The Green Man - Original hand-carved Linocut Print in Metallic Green on Black with Pagan Nature Symbol, Forest Tree Man/ Spirit/ Nymph
£40.00
Original hand-carved hand printed linocut of the Green Man by Joanna Lisowiec. Limited edition of 50.
Printed on archival quality Stonehenge Black Vellum. A 100% cotton rag paper with a smooth surface and 2 deckled edges.
The linocut design is printed in an unusual colour blend of shimmering silver-green. The true nature of this ink is hard to capture in photos but it catches certain lights and has a shimmering dimension to it.
These are printed on an antique Columbian printing press from 1838. This is a hand-made process so please expect some level of variation of texture and colour in the print you receive.
The Green Man (also known as Jack in the Green) can be found all over Europe and is recognised as a pagan symbol of nature worship, spring and renewal. It’s hard to say where this symbolism originated but what’s interesting is that even though many aspects of pagan culture and worship faded out with the arrival of Christianity, the gnarled faces of green men can be found ornamenting many churches and cathedrals. The early Christians sort of adopted the Green Man as it tied in with rebirth and resurrection. Today many people enjoy the Green Man as a symbol of conservation and a protecting spirit of nature.
*Please note that this is a hand-made item and there may be variations in colour and texture from the display image however these imperfections are what give this craft its charm and makes your print a unique, one of a kind piece of art.
** This is an unframed print. Please contact your local framer for advice!
