Persephone - Original hand-carved Linocut Art Print in black and white, feat. a floral bouquet with sunflower, wildflowers and butterflies
£55.00
This is an original hand carved and hand embellished linocut print in a limited edition of 30 prints made by the artist and illustrator Joanna Lisowiec.
The linocut relief is hand printed on an antique Columbian printing press from 1838 using dense black oil based ink by Hawthorn Printmaking Supplies.
The paper stock is a beautiful Japanese style Washi Paper called Himalayan Mitsumata. Handmade in the Katmandu valley and in the foothills of the Himalayas in Nepal. The pulp is made from bark fibers harvested from the native lokta or mitsumata plant. A renewable and highly sustainable natural resource.
The print is inspired by the greek goddess of flora, Persephone (also called Kore or Prosperine) who became queen of the underworld when she was abducted by Hades, the god of the underworld. When Persephone was lost to the rest of the world, winter came and all the plants withered away and the trees became bare. She was mourned especially be her mother Demeter, but eventually Persephone was able to reach an agreement with Hades where he allowed her to return to the world above each year for half the year. Whenever she did, spring burst forth into life and flowers sprung up from the earth wherever her feet touched. This linocut celebrates Persephone's yearly return to the world above, and the beauty and joy that fills one's heart with the arrival of spring.
This print is also available with hand-embellished colour. Please find it in my shop listings!
